The WIAMan Project was a large undertaking to create a crash dummy designed for underbody blasts (like an IED) sustained while aboard a military vehicle. Humvees and AMRAPs were being considered. The injuries being sustained in Afghanistan were severe and new. The traditional crash dummies were not designed to simulate this type of exposure and injury spectrum.

DTS (Diversified Technical Systems) took on much of the design and fabrication of the dummies themselves, though this was a collaborative effort with industry partners like Humanetics. Labs around the U.S. validated these designs by using human surrogates to confirm the bio fidelity of the dummy's response.

Multiple labs across the United States, including the UVa Center for Applied Biomechanics in the UVa Research Park, were finding ways to simulate a blast underneath such a vehicle, in a way that delivered the energy to the human surrogate aboard the test structure. This could be used to validate the WIAMan dummy.
